Learning for Life has really made a big difference to our learners’ lives, so much so that a young man who started at the college has made fantastic progress in the 4-years he has studied here. Starting at the college, with a history of bad attendance – due to illness, Christopher Adams had a great task ahead of him to catch up with a lot of his learning.

Norton started at Learning for Life in September 2020.  Norton, who has a number of profound mobility problems in both his arms and legs, started the college with very little knowledge of English and mathematics. Building up a very basic knowledge of numeracy and literacy in his first academic year, Norton still had not managed the manual dexterity and skill to write recognisable letters or numbers.

The staff at Learning for Life first met Kaitlyn when she attended a transition visit at our new site at Disability North with a parent. She produced some beautiful work showcasing her attention to detail, creativity and exceptionally neat handwriting. She was very anxious in her new environment and struggled to use any verbal communication. Kaitlyn chose to communicate with small nods and shakes of her head.

Due to personal circumstances one of our learners with complex autism (also has learning difficulties and has echolalia) left Learning for Life for a period to move to a different part of the country with a family member. He managed this move quite well as he lived in his grandmother’s house with family members. However, the family had a very traumatic time which affected them all very greatly.

In late 2020, one of our learners regularly talked about Tik Tok, she mentioned her nephews had created a page throughout the lockdown and she loved watching and helping them make their videos. Towards the end of December 2020 this learner suggested creating our own page, with the idea of dancing like her nephews and showing them ‘how much fun’ we have here at Learning for Life.

At Learning for Life one of our main priorities is to prepare our learners for adult life and especially the world of work.  Through our Enterprise Curriculum, and a number of high-profile projects, learners are able to engage with working life and develop the skills needed to thrive as an independent adult in todays’ world.
